Year of Jubilee

On Sunday night I preached at church on Leviticus 25. Felt pretty unprepared, but it came together on Sunday afternoon! Here are my three main points:

  • Sabbath Year – looking at the theme of Rest
  • Jubilee Year – looking at the theme of Redemption
  • Grace – looking at how we respond to God’s grace…

Day of Atonement

Yesterday I had the privelege to be able to preach Leviticus 16 to my church family… it’s an awesome passage packed with loads of juicy details which point us to Jesus’ work on the cross – we see in Hebrews 10:1-4 that what’s happening on the Day of Atonement is just a shadow of what’s coming in Jesus…

I preached in quite a thematic style, picking up implications and applications under 3 themes:

  1. An unapproachable God?
  2. Death and Life
  3. The Two Goats

The last point of application was to look at Hebrews 10:19-25… in light of Jesus’ atoning sacrifice, the big application is to draw near to God, to meet with his people and encourage each other, because he’s returning soon!

In two weeks time, I’ll be preaching from Leviticus 25, The Year of Jubilee.

Mark 1: 9-20

Mark 1:9-20

THEME:Jesus, God’s True King has come

AIM:Follow Jesus, God’s True King

1. Jesus: The True Son (v.9-11)

God confirms that Jesus is His Son.

Ps. 2:7- God’s Son is the King

Why is he baptised?

Heaven being torn open?

2. Jesus: The True Israel (v.12-13)

Jesus is tempted for 40 days in the wilderness – led there by the Spirit.

Parallels to Israel’s 40 years in the desert – Jesus was tested but didn’t sin!!

He’s the King – angels attend him!

3. Jesus: The True King (v.16-20)

Time is now-God’s King is here, he’s bringing his Kingdom

RESPONSE-Repent and Believe the gospel

Follow me-He has authority, He is the leader

RESPONSE- Immediately they left and followed (Jesus, God’s King)

If God is good why is the world so bad?

Genesis 1-2

  • God created everything – “and it was good”

Genesis 3

  • We reject God. We Sin
  • Suffering enters the world. We are the cause
  • DEATH, “The earth is cursed”, “nature is in conflict”, “pain in child-bearing”

Romans 8:18-25

  • V.22 Creation groans as in child-birth “bondage to decay”, can’t escape
  • V.23 We groan inwardly… as we wait, patiently
  • V.18 Something better is coming!!

For the non-Christian, this world is as good as it gets…

But for the Christian, THERE IS HOPE!

Revelation 21:1-5 (open this one, get someone to read)

  • New Creation – no more suffering

So it’s my fault? Does God not care??

Hebrews 4:15 JESUS is able to sympathize with our weaknesses, because he was tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin.

Born into poverty, broken family, manual job, homeless, under military occupation, abandoned by friends, betrayed, falsely accused, mocked, beaten, tortured, murdered

JESUS CAN IDENTIFY WITH OUR SUFFERINGS

BUT, HE ALSO DEALS WITH OUR BIGGEST PROBLEM - SIN

2 Cor 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Why trust the Bible?

What does the Bible say about itself?

Old Testament - 2 Tim 3:16, 2 Peter 1:21

New Testament - John 14:24John 14:26, 2 Peter 3:15-16

Circular Argument? - American Constitution

What other evidence?

- unity and consistency of the Bible

- historical and archaeological evidence

Jesus God’s Word!

John 1:1 “..the Word was with God and the Word was God”

Hebrews 1 - God Speaks! Prophets, Jesus

Luke 24:44 - Who is the Bible about?

Common objections

The god of the OT is angry, I prefer the God of love and mercy in the NT…

God is immutable – he doesn’t change! (Ps 102:25-27Heb 13:8)

The Gospel in the OT - Exodus 6:7, 34:6

Wrath in the NT - Matt 26:39Rev 14:10 (the cup = God’s Wrath)

What did Jesus read? (Lk 24:44 again)

The Cross: God’s Love and Wrath

Isaiah 53:4 - God’s anger against Sin is poured out on Jesus

Romans 5:8 - God gives himself for his enemies

Islam: The Bible has been corrupted by the church…

- NT written AD 40-100 Plato 400 BC

- Earliest copy AD 125 Earliest copy 900 AD

- 24,000 copies 7 copies

Was the Bible corrupted before or after Muhammed?

Before? - Muslims are called to believe the Bible (Sura 4:136)

After? - What about the 24,000 copies? No evidence of corruption

Sexist? Homophobic? Outdated?

Paul’s writings aren’t inspired! It’s all down to interpretation!

Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God

God is Sovereign - Acts 17:24-27

What does this tell us about God’s sovereignty?

Why did God create? What does this mean for us and our evangelism?

Our work vs God’s work - 2 Corinthians 4:1-6

Who is involved in the work of Evangelism?

What does God do? What has God done for me? Parallels to Ephesians 2?

What do/don’t we do?

3 G’s (from Rico Tice)

GRACE - We’re justified by grace alone!

GEHENNA - Those who don’t know God go to hell!

GODLINESS - Being like God means being an evangelist!

Challenges of Sovereignty?

Acts 13:48

John 6

Romans 9

Atonement? - to cover, to reconcile

Leviticus 5 - The lamb and the Ram

Isaiah 53 - Prophecy about the coming Lamb and the Ram

Hebrews 9 - A perfect sacrifice
