An audience with Alistair Begg

On Wednesday of this week I had the priviledge to spend an hour or so with Alistair Begg….

Alistair BeggAlistair Begg has been in pastoral ministry for 32 years. Following graduation from The London School of Theology he served eight years in Scotland at both Charlotte Chapel in Edinburgh and Hamilton Baptist Church. Since 1983, he has been the senior pastor at Parkside Church near Cleveland, Ohio.  He has written several books and is heard daily and weekly on the radio program, Truth For Life.  The teaching on Truth For Life stems from the week by week Bible teaching at Parkside Church. He and his wife, Susan, have been married 32 years and they have three grown children.

Me and my dad went to chat with him about Bible by the Beach… he’ll be doing the Bible readings in 2010. But we also got to chat about a number of issues…

We spoke about the Emerging Church and the effect that’s having in the States, and related to that, the lacking of good, solid Bible teaching that promotes Christians to grow in many churches either side of the Pond.

Two things really surprised me though… Alistair has never heard of ‘Federal Vision’, and has never heard Mark Driscoll preach… He also dislikes blogging – I kept quiet at that point!

In speaking one thing was very aparent… Alistair is a pastor at heart, despite being in another country, speaking at a conference, his clear desire is to be with his congregation, to be preaching to them, encouraging and pastoring them. Good times – he also has a very dry sense of humour, and supports Glasgow Rangers!

Alistair Begg – BBTB10

Alistair Begg is coming to speak at BBTB 2010. The theme of the conference is ‘The Glory of Christ in the Cross’ – so we don’t know exactly what yet, but his Bible readings will be based on some aspect of the Cross. Make sure you book in!

Bible by the Beach

…was great! You should come next year.

I didn’t get much blogging done, but hope to get some rough talk notes up soon. In the mean time check out the new BBTB Website, you’ll find a Blog, posting conference snippets, a few freebie talks, online shop for media sales (£1 downloads coming soon), and a few pics from the event.

You’ll also find a little promo video for 2010. Alistair Begg is already confirmed to come and do the Bible readings, and we’re hoping that the Getty’s will join him to lead the music. You can expect to see another strong line up of speakers and seminars next year.

Terry Virgo – Mark 6

Terry Virgo

On Saturday night at Bible by the Beach we welcomed Terry Virgo from Newfrontiers to speak, he spoke on Jesus walking on the water… here was his basic outline:

Mark 6:45-52

He sends them into the storm – he loves you just as you are, he loves you too much to leave you as you are.

He saw them in the storm – all is laid bare before him, he sees even through the darkness.

He saved them in the storm – he took the initiative, walking on water (this is truly God).

You can purchase a video DVD, an audio CD, or an MP3 download of the talk at the Bible by the Beach website.

Paul Williams – Motivated for Total Worship

Here are the notes from Paul Williams’ first talk at Bible by the Beach…

Paul WilliamsRomans 12:1-13
We all want a bit of the gospel, all the blessings, but not so much that it changes my life.

What does it mean to be sold out for Jesus? A tame, comfortable life is not a respectable response to the gospel – worship here is about giving our whole lives.

Be motivated - by the gospel v.1 – ‘remember the mercies of God’ – we forget God’s mercy because we forget who we are, the world tells us that we’re worth it! Christian – are you gripped by the mercy of God? That’s the foundation of the Christian life, of a life sold out for Jesus.

Be worshipping – by offering yourself. Don’t bring an offering, be an offering. Jesus is the complete guilt offering, we bring ourselves as a thank offering as a response to Jesus – this is a reasonable response, a life for a life. We’re good at compartmentalising – what is your no go area with Jesus?

Be supported – by other Christians. We all need encouragement to live for Jesus. ‘Morning Watch’ – Oliver Barclay at Cambridge – encouraged one another. We should share our struggles, battles, joys to encourage each other – we need this to live total worship.

Be transformed – by the renewing of your mind. The pattern of this world (Romans 1 – we turn away from God) drags us down, God gives us over to the spiral of rejecting God. When God speaks he creates and transforms – God’s word should transform us as we study his word, as we apply it to every area of our lives. Some find the Bible boring so don’t read it, some love it, but aren’t changed by it!

Coming Up

Well I’m back from NWA! I’m not sure it was quite the holiday I needed – didn’t get much sleep, and the 8 hour journey doesn’t help, but at least it was sunny. Anway… I suspect I shall produce some concluding thoughts in the near future post Word Alive.

Also, I’ve started looking into the process of Ordination in the Church of England, so before anything official happens I need to do some reading on Christian leadership, on Anglicanism and on some issues, particularly on Infant Baptism… so it seems my blog would be a good place to record stuff that I learn from this.

At the end of the month, we’ll be gearing up for Bible by the Beach – I’ll be blogging all about what goes on and probably posting some videos about what’s happening.

So… you don’t really care about this, but I figure if I write down the stuff which I propose to blog about then I might actually get off my bum and do it.

Bible by the Beach

Bible by the Beach
Bible by the Beach is a new Bible-teaching conference that begins in May 2009. The event runs over the bank-holiday weekend, 1st-4th May 2009, and is held at the Congress Theatre complex in Eastbourne. It is best compared to Keswick – you come to Eastbourne, find your own accommodation and then come along to as many or as few sessions as you like. The cost of an adult delegate pass is just £50, with children (under 16) just £1!!

The conference is the initiative of the Bishop of Lewes, Wallace Benn and has been organised by a number of local ministers from different denominational backgrounds, including my dad. In the first year there is already a strong line up of speakers including;

  • Wallace Benn, Bishop of Lewes
  • Terry Virgo, New Frontiers
  • Paul Williams, Christ Church Fulwood
  • Kent & Barbara Hughes, Wheaton College Church
  • Mike Ovey, Principal of Oak Hill
  • Simon Vibert, Vice-Principal of Wycliffe
  • Andrew Baughen, St. James’ Clerkenwell

And some more… plus Stuart Townend will be leading the music, and performing a concert.
