Some links…

Well I may not have blogged that much recently… there’s plenty of posts to come, some are drafted already, but alas no time… however, I have been reading around…

Should you support Christian bookshops rather than Amazon??

I have mixed feelings which I’ve been discussing on Phil Whittall’s blog here and here.

Preaching Notes

I’m trying to work out the best way to do this… I like note form rather than script… Josh Harris has been publishing some well known preachers notes… my favourites are; CJ Mahaney, Tim Keller, Mark Driscoll.

Matt Chandler starts blogging

Love this guy. Loving him preaching on Luke, and pleased to hear he’s now got a blog called Dwell Deep.

Desiring God conference - The Power of Words and the Wonder of God

Piper, Driscoll, Ferguson, Kauflin, Tripp etc. check out the audio and video

Driscoll in Syndey and Jensen’s response

18 point critique of Sydney Anglicans (given that British Evangelical Anglicans steal all their ideas from Sydney, they pretty much all apply here too!)… 18 Obstacles to Effective Evangelism

Jensen gives his thoughts in response

….still coming soon will be some book reviews and the finishing off of some old posts

Preach the Gospel to Christians

When’s the last time you looked another Christian in the eye and said ‘Mate you’re a sinner.  I know you have struggles, I know you’re tired but, deep down you’re wicked!  That’s your real problem.  But Mate - you’re clothed in the righteousness of Christ, carried on His heart before the Father, rejoiced over in the presence of the angels.’

Finding Coordinates on Google Map
icon1 Posted by Hugh in On the Web on 22nd Aug, 2008 | No Comments

I don’t usually make technology related posts, but I keep having to Google this to remember how to do it! So, if you need to find the coordinates, the latitude and longitude of a location on Google Maps then here’s how you do it…

  1. Find your point of interest on Google Maps
  2. Right click on the point and click ‘Center map here’ - centre?
  3. In your browser address bar type the following Javascript code, then press enter:

javascript:void(prompt(gApplication.getMap().getCenter()))

A small dialogue box will then appear with two long numbers in brackets - latitude coordinate first, longitude second.

I use these two create Google Maps in my websites through plugins for Wordpress and Joomla.

The Four Horseman of Evangelicalism
icon1 Posted by Hugh in On the Web on 22nd Aug, 2008 | No Comments

I love when Driscoll gives those little quips - he describes Billy Graham, John Stott, J.I. Packer and Francis Schaeffer as “The Four Horseman of Evangelicalism”. He says this in a 20 minute interview with Sydney Anglicans (Peter Jensen possibly). There’s also loads of great video content based around GAFCON.

New Look
icon1 Posted by Hugh in On the Web on 20th Aug, 2008 | 1 Comment

You can tell it’s been one of those lazy days in front of the Olympics when by the end of it my blog looks a little different… Hope you like the new blue look!

The theme has been designed by ‘Elegant Wordpress Themes‘ a small professional Wordpress theme website. This in my view is the best value for money professional worpress theme website. Currently they have 9 themes (I think more coming), you can use them on as many websites that belong to you (not for clients) as you want. This will cost you £12 ($20) a year, which is why it’s very good value for money! I think there are better themes out there, but generally they’re over priced.

Online Commentary Survey
icon1 Posted by Hugh in Books, On the Web on 19th Aug, 2008 | No Comments

A new site has been launched called BestCommentaries.com which gives an online survey of just about every commentary. The site takes it information from survey information from; Don Carson, John Piper, John Glynn, Trempar Longman, R.C. Sproul and others. You can see commentaries by book of the Bible, by series or by author. There’s also a list of the two top rated commentaries for each book of the Bible and a list of forthcoming commentaries.

So for each commentary there’s a rating, price, where you can buy it, categories on the ‘type’ or ‘level’ of commentary. There’s a cool feature which is a flash bookshelf (below) it shows you what the commentary looks like, even the thickness as you pull it off the book shelf! Helpfully there’s the facility for site members to add reviews of commentaries as well as that all reviews from Amazon.com are imported. Definately a good place to go if you need to acquire a commentary or build a collection.

An interview with… me
icon1 Posted by Hugh in Life, On the Web on 17th Aug, 2008 | No Comments

Now quite why anyone would want to interview me I don’t know, frankly I am dull and unworthy of having my life or thoughts shared with anyone! But, a guy called David Capener (blogs at thebroadcast.org.uk), who is a New Frontierser from Norfolk is doing a series of interviews with non-NewFrontiersers about their experiences of New Frontiers. So there’s a little bit of background on who I am and some of my thoughts shared in light of attending the Brighton Conference. Check out the interview here.

Mars Hill have launched a new media library and the code that runs their pages has been updated - very web 2.0! It’s great to see that there are some good Christian coders out there, see below:

I’m still not entirely sure what I’m going to be doing after University, although I’m tempted to apply for this…

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/hampshire/7328410.stm

Two evenings per week, £7 an hour, and all expenses paid… that’s right you can get paid to spend an evening at the pub with an old gent, and get your beer and crisps paid for you!

Some money advice

Getting on with one's own personal finances can be pretty difficult, sometimes. However, there is good news in store for your saving accounts! By investing in insurance, you can protect yourself and your finances from any unforeseen expenses. Insurances like home insurance, van insurance, or the seemingly more obscure caravan insurance can all help with covering your personal items.
