Judges and Luke

So the Summer was pretty busy for talks. I’d love to write up some of the thinking done on a camp seminar stream on the Holy Spirit. But for now let me just share some stuff from recent sermons preached at Bishop Hannington Church.

We’d been going through Judges in the morning and Luke in the evening. The Dale Ralph Davis commentary on Judges, ‘Such a Great Salvation‘ in the Christian Focus series is a must for preaching Judges. But personally the most helpful commentary I found was one by George Schwab, ‘Right in their own eyes‘ in the ‘Gospel according to the Old Testament’ series by P&R. I’ll definitely be investing in more in this series.

I have to say I haven’t really found anything overly helpful on Luke. Most I have; Morris, Wilcock, Bock (IVP) tend to be much more of an overview in Luke and not particularly helpful for getting into the text and preaching it. I’ve very much enjoyed Matt Chandler’s series on Luke, fairly thematic in his exposition, and helps you see the big pictures.

Anyway here are some of the talks:

You call me Lord? – Luke 6: 43-49

Doubting Jesus – Luke 7: 18-35

A Meal with Jesus – Luke 9: 10-17

Neighbours – Luke 10: 25-37

Sign Language – Luke 11: 29-36

Samson the Strong Saviour – Judges 13:1-14:20

Sodom in St. Saviours – Judges 19:1-20:48

Hi Hugh – On Luke, I’ve found Joel Green helpful. I’m sure they’ll have it in your library. See my post here.

Have a great time at Oak Hill!
