Interview with Tim Chilvers

Aug 27

Tim Chilvers is associate minister at Christ Church Surbiton. Like me, he’s from an Anglican church, like me, he went to the Brighton New Frontiers conference, and like me he’s just been interviewed about his experiences of the conference by David Capener.

Good interview. Sounds like we both had a similar overwhelmingly positive experience there (with a few little niggles).

  1. I do think that the comment about some of the non-Driscoll main sessions is probably fair. When I look at what I’m downloading from the conference it’s not everything. Which is ok, but the bar needs to be raised a bit, whether by the existing guys or by using other people.

  2. I guess the ‘problem’ is that with the exception of Driscoll all the speakers are from within New Frontiers – big conferences in general tend to have a broader range of speakers, usually a couple of guest/external speakers bringing well prepared messages with a bit of a different slant/style/perspective.

Equally Driscoll does have a habit of setting the bar pretty high! I’d be interested to hear other up coming leaders in New Frontiers speak – Joel Virgo is definitely a good communicator, but he’s the only one I’ve heard.

  3. I’m not saying all the others were poor – some were v.good, but there is work to do. For an ‘in house’ conference it’s a strength that the ‘main speaker’ is always an outsider.

Joel Virgo is good. Amsterday church planter Sean Green also, and some of the 21-25 year olds I’m hearing preach in Exeter are coming on v.well.
